Doane Falls, a quiet country stream turns turbulent

A beautiful description of Doane Falls is found on The Trustees of Reservations’ website. This organization searches out Massachusetts properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value and preserves them for public use and enjoyment.

The Trustees of Reservations describes what makes Doane’s Falls a special place:

“We think it’s the pastoral quality of a reservation that showcases a quiet country stream as it turns turbulent. The waterfalls on Lawrence Brook just before it enters Tully Lake indeed grab one’s attention, both visually and audibly. The falls treat visitors to a bit of nature’s frothy frenzy, if not fury…” Read more here.

In the meantime, enjoy this picture graciously shared by Dana via Flickr. When we asked if we could use the photo she looked us up and found a family connection.

“I actually read a little about your association and came across Deacon John Doane…. small world, but John Dunham and Governor Bradford were both my ancestors, so our families once knew each other pretty well.

“Happy to share the picture.”

Thanks, Dana!

Photographer Ray Elliott took a picture after driving past the rusty vehicle for years. He posted it on Flickr which is how we discovered it.

Doane Falls glints in the sunlight

Doane Falls

Doane’s Falls is a series of five waterfalls located in Royalston, Massachusetts along an 0.2-mile section of Lawrence Brook, a tributary of the Millers River. There is an extraordinary collection of photographs of the falls on Flickr. This one comes from Massachusetts resident Glen Taylor of Mountain View Photography.

Taylor captured the picture July 5, 2009 and writes:

“Can you believe it? I actually got outside with my camera today.

“My brother-in-law hadn’t been to Doane’s Falls before so we went out this morning. The water is quite high since it’s done nothing but rain for about a month. The stone bridge is just visible in the top right of the photo but you can’t see the first two drops from this angle. I like how the sun’s rays stretch through the scene.”

“We also visited another waterfall after this, so all-in-all, it was a great morning.”

From another adventure to Doane Falls, Glen Taylor writes, “Taken on a recent trip to Doane’s Falls in Royalston, MA. A friend of mine, planning a trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, needed some advice on how to take waterfall shots where the water was silky smooth. I know this shot doesn’t have silky smooth water, but I was showing him the difference between a long exposure and a shorter exposure.” September 14, 2008.

Picnic this weekend promises to fortify family spirit

August 14, 2012 Events Comments
2006 Picnic reunion at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

The Doanes have had a long history in America from the time Deacon John Doane arrived with his family in Plymouth in 1630 to the present.

Learning about the history of one’s family, community, region, and nation is not only fun, but also can make for a sense of pride in knowing who you are and where you came from. It is with this spirit the Doane Family Association of Oregon Washington Idaho invites family and friends to rediscover some of the colorful people in the Doane family at the picnic this Saturday, August 18, 2012.

At 11:00 a.m. family and friends will gather at the covered area at Hazel Dell Park, 2300 NE 68th St, Vancouver, WA. The Doane picnics have always been a great time to visit and participate in a great picnic. Picnicers are encourage to bring their meal, beverage, plates and utensils — and also something to share. It can be as sweet as dessert or as simple as a story.

At 12:30 p.m. the Oregon Washington Idaho Doanes will hold an informal meeting — with reports from their secretary, treasurer, historian and any past officials who desire to speak. The gathering will get the latest about the national organization from the cousins who recently returned from attending July’s National Doane Reunion in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A discussion of incoming and returning officers will follow, and a vote will be cast on where to hold next year’s picnic.

There are some exciting things to experience on August 18. Doanes are asked to put the event on their calendar and invite sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, children, grandchildren, family and friends to a day that celebrates the family, history, and the great northwest. Former President John Doane says, “It will fortify the family quite literally!.”

PICNIC SUGGESTIONS: Bring clothing for weather from hot to cold, and if you have one wear your DOANE t-shirt. Temperatures may vary. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a hat for the sun. Bring plenty of digital memory for capturing the day. And if we have any writers in the group – consider writing a story for our new website,

BOOK EXCHANGE: did you read a good book this summer that you would like to trade for another good book? Bring it to the reunion. There will be a special spot at this year’s gathering for book trades. There will also be a small collection of books for sale. All cash generated will go to the chapter to help promote reading — especially reading of the awesome new website.

Do you read everything on your Kindle?

If yes, email your book review to, and watch for it to appear as a post on the chapter website.

Doane Sisters gear up for picnic discussion.
